Welcome to Part 7 of our Soccer Training at Home series! In this engaging session, we will focus on essential skills for passing and receiving the ball. Athletes Camryn Walker and Sophie Quastel will guide you through a series of drills that are specifically designed to enhance your passing techniques while simultaneously improving your ability to receive the ball effectively. So, let’s dive right in!
Passing and Receiving Drills
- Sole Drags (Left) To kick things off, we will begin with sole drags using your left foot. This technique is crucial for controlling the ball while also keeping your opponent guessing. As you practice this drill, remember to stay light on your feet and maintain a low center of gravity for better control.
- Sole Drags (Right) After mastering the sole drags on your left, let’s switch to sole drags with your right foot. By doing this, you will develop versatility in your ball control, which is vital for maneuvering effectively on the field. Consequently, this drill not only improves your skill set but also builds your confidence in using both feet.
- One Touch and Shuffle Following that, we will move on to the one touch and shuffle drill. In this exercise, focus on receiving the ball with one touch before shuffling to the side. This drill emphasizes quick decision-making and efficient footwork, both of which are essential skills in any soccer match.
- One Touch and Shuffle + Turn and Dribble Now, let’s build on the previous drill by incorporating a turn and dribble after the one touch and shuffle. By adding this element, you enhance your ability to transition quickly from receiving to dribbling, simulating real game situations where speed and agility are crucial.
- Pass and Follow Next, we’ll practice the pass and follow drill. This exercise reinforces the importance of movement after making a pass. Therefore, after passing the ball, make sure to follow your pass to receive the ball back. This promotes teamwork and effective communication with your teammates.
- Pass, Stop, and Follow Following that, let’s incorporate a stop after the pass. In this drill, you will pass the ball, then stop your movement, and subsequently follow your teammate’s movement. This emphasizes the importance of awareness on the field, as you must always be ready for the next play.
- One Touch Passing (Left, Centre, Right, Centre) Now, let’s focus on one touch passing. Start by passing to your left, then to the center, and finally to your right. Repeat this sequence while ensuring you receive the ball with one touch each time. Not only does this drill improve your accuracy, but it also enhances your overall control.
- One Touch - Passing Laterally After mastering the one-touch passing drill, let’s practice passing laterally. This exercise helps you develop your ability to maintain possession while effectively moving the ball across the field. In addition, this skill is particularly important during a game when you need to create space and opportunities.
- One Touch Passing - Alternating Left and Right Next, let’s alternate between passing with your left and right foot during the one touch passing drill. This variation enhances your overall passing skill, ensuring you can deliver accurate passes regardless of your position on the field. Furthermore, this drill promotes ambidexterity, which is a valuable asset in soccer.
- Two Touch Passing - Alternating Left and Right Finally, we will conclude with two touch passing, alternating between your left and right foot. This drill allows for more control and precision, helping you develop a solid foundation for passing under pressure. As you execute this drill, focus on your body positioning and follow-through for optimal results.
