A Leader for Team Melli
Nekounam’s club success ran parallel with his international career. He debuted for Iran in 2000 and quickly became a core member of Team Melli.
He played in two World Cups—in 2006 and 2014—and featured in multiple AFC Asian Cups. More than once, he scored vital goals, often stepping up in high-pressure moments.

Later, he had short stints with clubs in Kuwait and Qatar before retiring in 2016.

Transition to Coaching
Retirement didn’t pull Nekounam away from the game. Instead, he moved into coaching. He began his managerial career with Khooneh be Khooneh and later managed Foolad FC.
As a coach, he brought the same calm intensity that defined his playing days. His teams were well-organized and disciplined. Under his guidance, Foolad won the Hazfi Cup in 2021.
His ability to develop young players has made him one of Iran’s most respected young coaches. Many believe it's only a matter of time before he leads Team Melli from the bench.
